Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6180

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that it was said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib is satirising you. So Sayyiduna Ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, grant me permission to satirise him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you the one who said, 'May Allah make firm'?" He said: Yes, I said: "May Allah make firm the goodness He has granted you, as He made Musa (peace be upon him) firm, and grant you victory like the victory granted to him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And may Allah treat you with the same goodness." Then Sayyiduna Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, grant me permission to satirise him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you the one who said, 'Hammat' (it intended)?" He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah: "The tribe of Quraysh intended to overpower its Lord; and whoever contends with the Overpowerer of all overpowerers (Allah) will surely be overpowered." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Know that Allah has not forgotten this saying of yours." Then Sayyiduna Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, grant me permission," and he put out his black tongue and said: "O Messenger of Allah, grant me permission; if you wish, I will tear the water-skins of their honour to pieces with my tongue." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go to Abu Bakr so that he may inform you of the history of this people, their days and their genealogies, then satirise them, and Jibril will be with you."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with these words; however, Imam Muslim recorded it at length through the narration of Khalid bin Yazid.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted to 'Jabir', while the correct name is 'Hatim', and he is Hatim bin Abi Saghirah who was mentioned; this is also supported by "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd".

Note / Clarification: The sentence "Allah will not forget this for you" is not in manuscripts (S) and (M), while it is present in (Z) and (B). In manuscript (Z) there was a sign of deletion over it, but we have retained it in accordance with manuscript (B) and "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd".

Grading: This narration is 'hasan li-ghayrihi', even though this chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): On the side of Simak bin Harb there is 'irsal', and on the side of al-Suddi (Isma'il bin 'Abd al-Rahman) there is 'inqita'', because the most likely view is that he did not hear from al-Bara' bin 'Azib.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in 'al-Tabaqat' (4/ 325), and through him Ibn 'Asakir in 'Tarikh Dimashq' (12/ 504), from 'Abdullah bin Bakr al-Sahmi with both chains.
Important point: This sentence to Hassan, "Satirize them, and Jibril is with you", is entirely sahih, and it is established from al-Bara' through other routes (see the previous hadith number 6133).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter, the long narration of Imam Muslim (2490) via al-Layth from Khalid bin Yazid is narrated from 'A'ishah and is a shahid for its meaning; it is not the hadith of al-Bara', as one might suppose from the author's (al-Hakim's) words.
