(2). It is narrated from Abu al-Hasan, the mawla of Banu Nawfal, that when this verse of Surah al-Shu'ara' was revealed: "And as for the poets, those who go astray follow them" [Surah al-Shu'ara': 224], Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah and Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with them both) came weeping to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) was reciting to them until, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached this part: "Except those who believe and do righteous deeds", he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This refers to you." Then when he recited: "And remember Allah much", he said: "This refers to you." And when he recited: "And defend themselves after they have been wronged", he said: "This too refers to you." [Surah al-Shu'ara': 227]
