It is narrated from Irak bin Malik that Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "In the time of Jahiliyyah, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most beloved of all people to me. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) received prophethood and went to Madinah, Hakim bin Hizam came (to Makkah) at the season of Hajj. He saw a robe of Dhu Yazan, the king of Yemen, being sold for fifty dirhams, and he bought it in order to present it as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him to accept the gift, he (peace and blessings be upon him) refused." Ubaydullah says: I think he said: "We do not accept anything (as a gift) from the idolaters, but if you wish, we will take it for its price." So I gave the robe to him (peace and blessings be upon him), until he (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Madinah. Then I saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) on the pulpit wearing that very robe, and I have never seen anyone more handsome in that robe than him (peace and blessings be upon him) that day. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave that robe to Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both). Hakim saw Usamah wearing it and said: O Usamah, do you wear the robe of Dhu Yazan? He replied: "Yes, because I am better than Dhu Yazan, my father is better than his father, and my mother is better than his mother." Hakim says: I went back to Makkah and began telling the people of Usamah's words, to their amazement.
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our manuscripts the wording here, "hatta ata al-Madinah", is a distortion; the correct wording is "hina aba 'alayya al-hadiyyah" (when he refused my gift), which is more fitting in context.
Grading: This is a "sahih hadith"; however, its last part, "I saw it on him (peace and blessings be upon him) on the pulpit", is weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain contains Abdullah bin Salih (the scribe of al-Layth), who is alone in narrating this sentence; hence this part is judged weak. Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (3125), and through him Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (15/101), via Abdullah bin Salih. Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in the "Musnad" (24/15323) without this addition, via Abdullah bin al-Mubarak from al-Layth bin Sa'd, and this chain is "sahih".
