Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6163

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (for wealth) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave to me; then I asked again insistently, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Hakim, how strange your asking is! Indeed, this wealth is green and sweet, yet along with that it is the dirt of people's hands. And indeed the Hand of Allah is above the hand of the giver, and the hand of the giver is above the hand of the one who asks, and the hand of the one who is given is the lowest of hands."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Muslim bin Jundab from Hakim bin Hizam is to be taken as "muttasil" (connected), as Ibn Khuzaymah considered preponderant in "al-Tawhid" (1/156): since his hearing from Ibn Umar is established, his hearing from Hakim bin Hizam is not unlikely.
Important point: Ibn Abi Dhi'b is the well-known muhaddith Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Dhi'b.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (24/15321) via Yazid bin Harun from Ibn Abi Dhi'b, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: Its details have passed at the earlier hadith no. (2161).
Note / Clarification: The phrase "fa-alhaftu" means: I was very insistent and excessive in asking (begging).
Note / Clarification: "Ma ankara mas'alataka" means: how ugly and disliked this request of yours is, since you have exceeded its limit.
Note / Clarification: "Khadirah hulwah" (green and sweet) means that worldly wealth is attractive and desirable in every respect, in taste as well as in colour and appearance.
Note / Clarification: "The dirt of people's hands" means that when spent, this wealth leaves the hands just as dirt does; or it refers to charity wealth (which has been called the dirt of people's wealth). Al-Sindi gave this explanation in his "Hashiyah" on the "Musnad Ahmad".
