Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 614

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) about the ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) would go out to relieve himself, and I would bring him water; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform ablution and wipe over his turban and his socks (outer socks).
This hadith is sahih (authentic), because Abu Abdullah, the freed slave of Banu Taym, is well known for the soundness and acceptance of his hadith. However, the two Shaykhs did not record the mention of wiping over the (outer) socks.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is sahih, but this chain is weak due to the unknown status of Abu Abd Allah and Abu Abd al-Rahman.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud recorded it (153) from Ubayd Allah bin Mu'adh al-Anbari, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it at 39/ (23903) via Muhammad bin Ja'far, from Shu'bah, with the wording: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wipe over the turban and over the leather socks."
Reference / Source: Ahmad (39/ 2388), Muslim (275), Ibn Majah (561), al-Tirmidhi (101) and al-Nasa'i (122) recorded it via Ka'b bin Ujrah, from Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the leather socks and the khimar."
Note / Clarification: "Al-khimar" here means the turban; it is called khimar because it "takhmir" the head, i.e. covers it.
Note / Clarification: "Al-muq" means the leather sock (khuff); it is originally a Persian word that was Arabized (mu'arrab), as Ibn al-Athir mentions in "al-Nihayah".
