Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 613

It is narrated from Abu Zur'ah bin Amr bin Jarir that Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) urinated, then performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks, and said: "What could prevent me from wiping when I myself have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping?" The people said: "Perhaps that was before the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah." He said: "I only accepted Islam after the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah."
This hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it with these necessary words; they agreed on other narrations of similar meaning. Its narrator Bukayr bin Amir is trustworthy (thiqah).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, but this particular chain is weak: Bukayr bin Amir is disputed, and the preponderant view is that he is weak.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud recorded it (154) from Ali bin al-Husayn al-Dirhami, with this chain.
Reference / Source: A similar narration was recorded by al-Tirmidhi (94) via Shahr bin Hawshab, from Jarir; Shahr bin Hawshab is taken into consideration in corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Important point: The original of this hadith of Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) is sahih; it is narrated in the "Sahihayn" and elsewhere, as will come later.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibrahim here is Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Nakha'i, and Hammam is Hammam bin al-Harith al-Nakha'i.
Reference / Source: Via this route, the narration is in al-Bukhari (387) and Muslim (272).
