Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6135

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in two pieces of striped Yemeni cloth that belonged to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both). He (peace and blessings be upon him) was wrapped in them and then they were removed. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) had kept that garment with him so that he might be shrouded in it after he died. Then, after keeping it, he said to himself: "How can I keep for myself something in which Allah prevented His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) from being shrouded (that is, those sheets had been removed)?" So Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave those sheets away in charity.

Grading: This is a "sahih hadith", and this particular chain is "hasan" because of Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar al-Utaridi.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (7/247) via Abu Abdullah al-Hakim.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" and Abu al-Fadl al-Zuhri narrated it through different routes from Hisham bin Urwah.
Note / Clarification: In the narration of Ibn Abi Asim, the wording "hullah hibarah" occurs.
Reference / Source: Muslim (941/45) narrated from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in three white Sahuli garments of cotton, among which there was neither a shirt nor a turban.
Important point: People were confused about the Yemeni cloak (hullah) because it had been bought for him (peace and blessings be upon him), but it was left aside and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in the Sahuli garments. Abdullah bin Abi Bakr kept that cloak for his own shroud, but then, reflecting that had Allah been pleased with it He would have had His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded in it, he sold it and gave its price in charity.
Reference / Source: Muslim, Ibn Majah, al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban narrated the same meaning through routes from Hisham bin Urwah.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi called it a "hasan sahih hadith".
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (3149) and Ibn Hibban (6626) narrated it via al-Qasim bin Muhammad from Aishah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was first wrapped in a Yemeni cloak (hibarah), and then it was removed from him.
Note / Clarification: The word "hibarah" (with kasrah on the ha' and fathah on the ba') refers to a striped Yemeni cloak.
