Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6134

It is narrated from al-Qasim bin Muhammad that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) was struck by an arrow on the day of the Battle of Ta'if. Then, forty days after the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that wound opened up again and he passed away. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: "O my dear daughter! By Allah, (his departure from the world is just) as if a goat had been seized by its ear and taken out of our house." She replied: "All praise belongs to Allah, who kept your heart firm (in patience) and kept you steadfast upon right guidance." Then he went out, came back in again and asked: "O my dear daughter! Are you not afraid that you people may have buried Abdullah while he was still alive?" She said: "O my father! 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' (We belong to Allah and to Him we return)." He said: 'A'udhu billahi al-Sami' al-Alim min al-shaytan al-rajim' "I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from Satan the accursed. O daughter! Every person has two influencing forces (promptings) with him: one from the angel and one from Satan." The narrator says: Then a delegation of Banu Thaqif came to him, and that arrow was still kept with him. The arrow was brought before them, and he asked: "Does anyone among you recognise this arrow?" Sa'id bin Ubayd, the brother of Banu al-Ajlan, said: "This is the arrow that I shaped, fitted with feathers and bound with sinew at its end, and I am the one who shot it." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, this is the very arrow that martyred Abdullah bin Abi Bakr. So all praise belongs to Allah, who honoured him with martyrdom at your hand and did not disgrace you at his hand (by killing you in a state of disbelief), for the refuge of Allah is very vast."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is inconsistency in the manuscripts in this phrase, so we have established it according to al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra", where he narrated it from the author (al-Hakim).
Note / Clarification: The word "baraytuhu" means to pare or shave it, as the word is used for paring wood or a pen.
Note / Clarification: The word "rishtuhu" means fixing feathers (rish) on an arrow so that it flies straight.
Note / Clarification: The word "'aqabtuhu" means tying it firmly with sinew fibres; "'aqab" is the sinew from which bowstrings are made.

Grading: This chain is "talif" (worthless), because al-Haytham bin Adi is saqit (discarded) and accused of lying (muttaham bil-kadhib).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan" (9/98) via Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
