حَدَّثَنَا أبو محمد أحمد بن عبد الله المُزَني، حَدَّثَنَا أبو خَليفة، حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن سلَّام الجُمَحي، حَدَّثَنَا أبو عُبيدة مَعْمَر بن المُثنّى قال: كان اسمُ عبد الرحمن بن (1) أبي بكر في الجاهلية عبدَ العُزّى، فسمّاه رسولُ الله ﷺ عبدَ الرحمن (2).
Mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with them both). It is narrated from Abu Ubaydah Ma'mar bin al-Muthanna that he said: In the time of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah), the name of Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was "Abd al-Uzza", so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed his name to "Abd al-Rahman".

(1) من هنا إلى قوله: "موسى بن زكريا" من الحديث رقم (6119) سقط من (ز) بمقدار لوحة.
Note / Clarification: In manuscript (Z), the text from here up to the mention of "Musa bin Zakariyya" in hadith no. (6119) is missing, roughly one folio (lawhah).
(2) ذكره البيهقي في "السنن الكبرى" 6/ 204 بدون إسناد، قال: زعم أبو عبيدة .. فذكره.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi mentioned it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (6/204) without a chain, on the authority of Abu Ubaydah.
وذكره أيضًا بدون إسناد ودون نسبته لأبي عبيدة أبو نعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" 4/ 1815 قبل الحديث (4584)، وابن الأثير في "أسد الغابة" 3/ 363.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym (4/1815) and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/363) transmitted it without a chain.
وذكر مثله الزبير بن بكار عند أبي القاسم البغوي في "معجم الصحابة" 4/ 414، والزهري عند ابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 35/ 26 - 27.
Reference / Source: Something similar was mentioned by al-Zubayr bin Bakkar, as reported by Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (4/414), and by al-Zuhri, as reported by Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (35/26-27).
