Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6111

It is narrated from Ibrahim bin Ya'qub al-Juzjani that Sayyiduna Ziyad bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him), the brother of Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd, died in Kufah and was buried at the place called "al-Thawi". His kunyah was Abu al-Mughirah. Harithah bin Badr composed an elegy for him, saying: "May Allah send down His mercy upon the grave and purify it, the one at al-Thawiyyah, over which the dust-bearing winds scatter earth. Quraysh hastened the bier of their chief towards it, so today generosity and firm resolve lie buried in this grave. O Abu al-Mughirah! The world is grief-stricken at your parting, and surely the one whom this world has deceived is truly deceived. With you, good was repaid with good, and for evil deeds there was disapproval and rejection. People used to come to you in great numbers and you would give wealth generously; if only that door of yours, which has now (because of death) been shut, were open in the morning (for those who ask). After you, people's minds have become so light, as if sparrows had built their nests in their heads."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: Manuscripts (S) and (M) have "Zayd", and manuscript (Z) had the same, but "Badr" was written in its margin with a "sahh" (correct) mark. The correct name is "Harithah bin Badr al-Ghudani", who was a friend of Ziyad bin Mu'awiyah; it was he who elegized Ziyad in these verses, as will be clarified below.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibrahim bin Ya'qub al-Juzajani erred ("wahm") in making Ziyad bin Ubayd the brother of Fadalah bin Ubayd; in reality this Ziyad is the one called Ziyad bin Mu'awiyah or "Ziyad bin Abihi", who died in 53 AH at al-Thawiyyah near Kufa.
Note / Clarification: Muhammad bin Ubaydullah al-Utbi contradicted al-Juzajani (as Ibn Asakir transmitted), stating that when Ziyad bin Abihi died, Harithah bin Badr al-Ghudani elegized him. This is what is correct, because Harithah was a close friend of Ziyad.
