Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 61

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hani (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as part of a delegation, he said: "O Messenger of Allah! What thing makes Paradise obligatory?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold fast to excellence in speech and to feeding people."
This is a sound hadith in which there is no hidden defect ('illah), and the two of them (Imam Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. The defect in their view is that Hani bin Yazid has no narrator other than his son Shurayh. However, I have already stated the condition at the beginning of this book: when a well-known Companion has only one well-known Tabi'i narrating from him, we will use him as evidence and declare his hadith sahih, because it is sahih on the condition of both of them. Imam Bukhari used as evidence the narrations of Qays bin Abi Hazim from Mirdas al-Aslami and of Qays from Adi bin Amirah, while they have no narrator other than Qays. Likewise, Imam Muslim used as evidence the narrations of Abu Malik al-Ashja'i and of Majza'ah bin Zahir, each from his own father. Therefore, according to their own principle, using the narration of Shurayh bin Hani from his father as evidence becomes binding, because al-Miqdam and his father Shurayh are among the senior Tabi'in, and Hani bin Yazid came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with a delegation.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is strong.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Yahya bin Yahya in the chain is Yahya bin Yahya al-Naysaburi.
Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Hibban narrated it in his "Sahih" (504) by way of Ishaq bin Ibrahim (who is Ibn Rahawayh), from Yahya bin Yahya al-Naysaburi, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: With him it is narrated combined with the next hadith of the author.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn Hibban also narrated it again at number (490) by way of Qutaybah bin Sa'id, from Yazid bin al-Miqdam, limiting it to this portion only.

Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it (in Sahih al-Bukhari) at number (6434).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The one who used the narrations of Qays (who is Qays bin Abi Hazim) from Adi as proof is Imam Muslim, in his "Sahih" at number (1833), not Imam al-Bukhari.

Reference / Source: The narration of Majza'ah from his father (Thawr bin Majza'ah) is with Imam al-Bukhari at number (4173), but it is not with Imam Muslim.
