Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6077

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that in Basrah a black man who was with him narrated some hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). So Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) wrote to him asking about them. Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to him in reply: "You are indeed the best man of your time (in knowledge). I have not narrated anything about these matters from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), except that I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to urinate, so he went to a spot of soft earth at the foot of a wall and said: 'Among the Children of Israel, when urine got on one of them, he would cut it off with scissors. So when any of you intends to urinate, let him look for a (soft) spot for his urine.'"
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: In the manuscripts this word has been distorted into "ramath" (with ra'), whereas the correct word is "al-damath" (with dal).
Note / Clarification: 'Allamah al-Sindi said that "damath" means soft, loose ground; Ibn al-Athir added in "al-Nihayah": sand that is not compacted. This was done so that splashes of urine would not fly back.

Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic through supporting reports), except for its final part, "When one of you intends to urinate, let him seek out a (soft) place for his urine", which does not reach this grade.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In its chain the "black man" (al-rajul al-aswad) from whom Abu al-Tayyah narrated is unnamed (mubham), so this chain is weak.
Important point: Abu Dawud refers to Sulayman bin Dawud al-Tayalisi, and Abu al-Tayyah refers to Yazid bin Humayd al-Duba'i.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at (32/ 19537, 19568, 19714) through various routes via Imam Shu'bah with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud narrated it at (3) in brief with the words that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you intends to urinate, let him seek out a (soft) place for it". This narration is reported through the route of Hammad bin Salamah from Abu al-Tayyah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His (peace and blessings be upon him) statement, "Among the Children of Israel, when urine got onto one of them, he would cut it off with scissors", has a shahid (supporting report) in the hadith of Abd al-Rahman bin Hasanah (may Allah be pleased with him), which has already passed at numbers (670) and (671), and its chain is "sahih".
Note / Clarification: The word "qaradahu" in the text means "he cut it off", that is, he cut away the place that the urine had touched.
Note / Clarification: Regarding his (peace and blessings be upon him) statement "fal-yartad li-bawlihi", 'Allamah Ibn al-Athir said in "al-Nihayah": it means to seek a soft place for urinating, so that splashes of urine do not fly back onto him.
