It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not lawful for any man who believes in Allah and the Last Day to pray while holding back (urine or stool) and in urgent need, until he has relieved himself and become light."

Grading: This hadith is hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This particular chain is weak, because Yazid bin Shurayh is not a very strong narrator and he was inconsistent (idtirab) in it; moreover, between him and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) there is the intermediary Abu Hayy al-Mu'adhdhin. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (91) narrated it via the chain of Ahmad bin 'Ali from Thawr bin Yazid from Yazid bin Shurayh, who transmits it from Abu Hayy al-Mu'adhdhin (Shaddad bin Hayy) from Abu Hurayrah. Details of the narration: This narration is also reported through Yazid bin Shurayh from Abu Hayy al-Mu'adhdhin from Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) (Musnad Ahmad 37/22415), and from Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) (Musnad Ahmad 36/22152). Reference / Source: This narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported in Musnad Ahmad 15/(9697) through Dawud bin Yazid, and in Ibn Majah (618) and Ibn Hibban (2072) through Idris bin Yazid al-Awdi; both of them narrate it from their father Yazid bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Awdi. Grading: Through these two routes this narration is hasan. Note / Clarification: The word "haqin" (haqin) refers to a person who urgently needs to urinate (and holds it back while praying).
