It is narrated from Ibrahim bin Abdullah bin Hunayn that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas and Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with them) differed on the question of whether a person in ihram may wash his head with water (for coolness) without being in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah). So they sent me to ask about it of Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), who was at a place near Makkah. Then he mentioned the hadith at length.
This is a merit of Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him), that eminent Companions such as Ibn Abbas and al-Miswar refer to him in a question, and I think that the two Shaykhs, or one of them, have recorded it in the Book of Purification.

Grading: This is a "sahih hadith", but this particular chain contains a "wahm" (error). Technical note / Defect ('illah): What is preserved (mahfuz) is that it is the narration of Ibrahim bin Abd Allah bin Hunayn from his father (Abd Allah bin Hunayn), as in the narration of Imam Malik from Zayd bin Aslam from Ibrahim bin Abd Allah bin Hunayn found in the "Sahihayn" (al-Bukhari and Muslim) and elsewhere. The most likely view is that the source of this error is Usamah bin Zayd al-Laythi or Isma'il bin Abi Uways, since both have been criticized with regard to their memory and errors are reported from them. As for al-'Abbas bin al-Fadl al-Asfati, although there is criticism of him, he is corroborated here. Important point: The brother of Isma'il bin Abi Uways is named Abd al-Hamid, and Ibn Shihab refers to the well-known muhaddith Muhammad bin Muslim al-Zuhri. Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it at (3978) via al-'Abbas bin al-Fadl al-Asfati with this same chain, but he did not mention "from his father" in it; rather, at its end he said: "Ibrahim said: So I went back to them and informed them". Reference / Source: A similar narration was reported by Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (1/ 215) via Isma'il bin Abi Uways. (3948). Details of the narration: Zayd bin Aslam narrated it from Ibrahim bin Abd Allah bin Hunayn from his father, and made Abd Allah bin Hunayn the one to whom the incident happened. Reference / Source: Through this route it was narrated at length and in brief by Imam Ahmad in the "Musnad" (38/ 23529, 23548, 23578), al-Bukhari (1840), Muslim (1205), Abu Dawud (1840), Ibn Majah (2934), al-Nasa'i (3631) and Ibn Hibban (3948).
