Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6058

It is narrated from Abdullah bin al-Tufayl bin Sakhbarah, the son of the maternal brother of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that he saw in a dream that he met a group of Christians. He said: "You would be very good people if you did not claim that the Messiah is the son of Allah." The Christians replied: "And you too would be very good people if you did not say: Whatever Allah wills and whatever Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) wills." Then he met a group of Jews and said: "You would be very good people if you did not call Uzayr the son of Allah." They replied: "You too would be very good people if you did not say: Whatever Allah wills and whatever Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) wills." Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and related his dream. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have you related this dream to anyone else?" He said: Yes. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) praised and extolled Allah and said: "Your brother has seen a dream which has reached you. So do not say, 'Whatever Allah wills and whatever Muhammad wills,' but rather say: 'Whatever Allah alone wills, Who has no partner.'"

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: In our manuscripts this name is written as "'Ali bin Sa'id", but our strong opinion is that "Sa'id" is a distortion of "Ma'bad", since 'Ali bin Ma'bad is well known for narrating from 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Amr al-Raqqi, whereas among those who narrate from 'Ubayd Allah we have not found any narrator named 'Ali bin Sa'id.
Note / Clarification: However, we have not found any narration of Hilal bin al-'Ala' from 'Ali bin Ma'bad.

Note / Clarification: In manuscript (Z), from here until the end of hadith number (6064), there is a "kharm" (lacuna) amounting to one folio.

Grading: This is a "sahih hadith", although there is a disagreement over its chain from 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Amr al-Raqqi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ali bin Ma'bad narrated it through the route of Abd al-Malik bin 'Umayr from Rib'i bin Hirash from Abd Allah bin al-Tufayl (the nephew of Lady 'A'ishah through her mother), whereas Zakariyya bin 'Adi and Jandal bin Wafiq contradicted him and narrated it via Abd al-Malik from Rib'i from "al-Tufayl bin Abd Allah" (the brother of Lady 'A'ishah through her mother). What these two narrated also agrees with the narration of Hammad bin Salamah which comes next.
Important point: The "mahfuz" (preserved, correct) version is that it concerns al-Tufayl (the brother), as the author (al-Hakim) stated explicitly. It is not known whether this error came from 'Ali bin Ma'bad or from a narrator below him, or from 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Amr himself; for despite his being thiqah (trustworthy), Ibn Sa'd said about him that "he sometimes erred". And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi narrated it in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1368) through the route of Zakariyya bin 'Adi, and Imam al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (292) through the route of Jandal bin Wafiq, both of them from 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Amr with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: Jandal stated explicitly in his narration that this was "al-Tufayl bin Abd Allah", who was the brother of Lady 'A'ishah through her mother, whereas Zakariyya bin 'Adi did not name him but only said "the brother of 'A'ishah through her mother".
