It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari was saying in a gathering: "Is none of you able to recite a third of the Qur'an every night?" The people said: We are not able to do that. He said: "Indeed, 'Say: He is Allah, the One' is equal to a third of the Qur'an." The narrator says: Just then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived and heard what Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub said, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abu Ayyub has spoken the truth."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "weak" due to the weakness of 'Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah and Huyayy bin 'Abd Allah al-Ma'afiri. Important point: Ibn Bukayr is Yahya bin 'Abd Allah bin Bukayr, and Abu 'Abd al-Rahman is 'Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Hubuli al-Ma'afiri. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in (11/ 6613) by way of al-Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab, from Ibn Lahi'ah, with this chain. Important point: These words are also narrated from the hadith of Abu Ayyub himself as a statement initiated by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), not as a confirmation of Abu Ayyub. For details see "Musnad Ahmad" (38/ 23554), and this is what is correct. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which has passed under number (2103); however, its chain is weak. (5014). Reference / Source: The two hadiths of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Qatadah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with them both) are found in "Sahih al-Bukhari" at (5013) and (5014) respectively. (812). Reference / Source: The hadiths of Abu al-Darda' and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them both) are found in "Sahih Muslim" at (811) and (812) respectively. Note / Clarification: For the details of its other supporting reports, see under this same hadith in "Musnad Ahmad".
