Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6051

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed at the house of Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had eaten, he would send the rest of his food to him. He would look for the marks of the blessed hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and place his own hand exactly where his (peace and blessings be upon him) fingers had been. One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent food to him, but he did not find the marks of the fingers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in it. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I did not see the marks of your fingers. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There was garlic in it." In the narration of Shu'bah: He asked: Is it unlawful? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." And in the narration of Hammad: He said: O Messenger of Allah! You sent back to me food that you did not eat. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are not like me; the angel comes to me (and the smell of garlic is disagreeable to him)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: The text in square brackets (ma'qufayn) had dropped out of our manuscripts, and the meaning is not complete without it, so we established it from "Musnad al-Tayalisi" (590) and the other sources of takhrij.

Grading: It is a "sahih hadith", and this chain of it is "hasan" because of Simak bin Harb, and he has also been corroborated. Several narrators have narrated it from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, and Jabir bin Samurah heard it directly from Abu Ayyub, as will become clear in the takhrij.
Important point: Here Abu Dawud is Imam Sulayman bin Dawud al-Tayalisi.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi narrated it in (1807) by way of Mahmud bin Ghaylan, from Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj alone, with this chain.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi declared it a "hasan sahih hadith".
Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad narrated it in his additions (Zawa'id) to his father's "Musnad" at (34/ 20897), and Imam Ibn Hibban in (5110), by two routes from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj alone.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in (20990) and (21023), his son 'Abd Allah in (20898) and Imam Ibn Hibban in (5110), by various routes from Hammad bin Salamah alone.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (38/ 23525) and Imam Muslim (2053/ 170) narrated it by way of Muhammad bin Ja'far; also Imam Ahmad (23537) and Imam Muslim immediately after it (2053/ 170) by way of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan; and Imam al-Nasa'i (6596) by way of Khalid bin al-Harith. All three (Muhammad, Yahya and Khalid) narrate it from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj alone, from Simak bin Harb, from Jabir bin Samurah, from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him).
