Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6052

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to stay with me, I said: (O Messenger of Allah!) May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, I strongly dislike that I should be on the upper floor while you are on the floor below me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Being downstairs is more convenient for me, because people keep coming to meet me." He says: Once a water jar of ours broke and all its water spilled. So Umm Ayyub and I began drying up the water with our sheet, apart from which we had no covering, doing so out of fear that some drop of water might reach the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) below and cause him harm.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is a "sahih hadith".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In its chain Muhammad bin Ishaq was guilty of "idtirab" (inconsistency); once he narrated it (as here) by way of Yazid bin Abi Habib, from Abu al-Khayr Marthad, from Abu Umamah al-Bahili, from Abu Ayyub, while another time, by way of Yazid, from Abu al-Khayr, he mentioned the name "Abu Ruhm al-Sama'i" in place of Abu Umamah. The "mahfuz" (preserved) narration is the one with the name of Abu Ruhm. Thus Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi, after reporting it in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (57) by way of Ibn Ishaq with the mention of Abu Umamah, said: In my view this (the mention of Abu Umamah) is a wahm (error), and the hadith of Abu Ruhm is what is correct.
Important point: Abu al-Walid mentioned in the chain is Hassan bin Muhammad al-Faqih, and Jarir is Jarir bin Hazim.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in (38/ 23570) by way of al-Layth bin Sa'd, from Yazid bin Abi Habib, from Abu al-Khayr Marthad bin 'Abd Allah, from Abu Ruhm al-Sama'i, from Abu Ayyub.
Note / Clarification: He narrated it at length in a similar way, except that in it there is mention that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved (from the lower floor) to the upper floor. Allah knows best.
