Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6053

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed with me for a month. I observed his (peace and blessings be upon him) routine closely and saw that when the sun passed its zenith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would leave whatever worldly work was in his hand; and if he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asleep, it was as if he were woken up for that time. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would get up, take a bath or perform ablution, and then pray four rak'ahs, which he (peace and blessings be upon him) would complete with great excellence and composure. When the time of his (peace and blessings be upon him) departure drew near, I said: O Messenger of Allah! You stayed with me for a month, and I wished that you had stayed even longer than that. I reflected on all your (peace and blessings be upon him) routines and saw that when the sun passed its zenith, you (peace and blessings be upon him) would leave worldly work and occupy yourself with prayer. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, at that hour the gates of the heavens are opened, and the gates of the heavens and of Paradise are not closed until this prayer has been performed. So I love that at those moments a good deed of mine should rise up to my Lord, and that my deed should be presented first among the deeds of the worshippers."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) it was distorted here into "bin".

Grading: This narration is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan due to other supporting reports); otherwise this chain is "very weak" because of 'Ali bin Yazid al-Alhani, as there is agreement on his weakness.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ubayd Allah bin Zahr is also weak, especially when he narrates from this same 'Ali bin Yazid.
Important point: Yahya bin Ayyub is al-Ghafiqi, and al-Qasim is al-Qasim bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dimashqi.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (3854) by way of Yahya bin Ayyub al-'Allaf, from Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ibn al-Mubarak narrated it in "al-Musnad" (70) and "al-Zuhd" (1297) by way of Yahya bin Ayyub al-Ghafiqi al-Misri.
Reference / Source: A similar, abridged narration with better chains than this was reported by Imam Ahmad (38/ 23532), Abu Dawud (1270) and Ibn Majah (1157) by way of Qartha' al-Dabbi. Also Imam Ahmad narrated it by way of 'Ali bin al-Salt at (23551) and by way of an unnamed man at (23565). All three narrate from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): These chains contain weakness and inconsistency (idtirab), the details of which we have given in our notes on "Musnad Ahmad".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic it is narrated from 'Abd Allah bin al-Sa'ib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray four rak'ahs before Zuhr after the sun passed its zenith, and he would say: "At this time the gates of heaven are opened, so I love to send forward a righteous deed in it."
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (24/ 15396), al-Tirmidhi (478) and al-Nasa'i (329) narrated it, and its chain is "sahih".
