Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6028

It is narrated from Awanah bin al-Hakam that Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: "I am amazed at the person upon whom death has come while his mind is still sound: why does he not describe (the state of) death?" Then, when his own time of death drew near, his son Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "O father! You used to say that you were amazed at the person upon whom death comes and who, though in possession of his mind, does not describe its state. So now, while your mind is sound, describe death to us." He said: "O my dear son! Death is far too great a thing to be described, but I will tell you something of how it feels: I feel as though the mountains of Radwa have been placed upon my neck, I feel as though my belly has been filled with thorns, and I feel as though my soul is being drawn out through the eye of a needle."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "talif" (severely weak, worthless).
Technical note: In it, Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi and his shaykh Hisham (bin al-Kalbi) are both "matruk" (abandoned) narrators.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (vol. 5, p. 81) by way of Hisham bin Muhammad bin al-Sa'ib al-Kalbi.
Reference / Source: Al-Baladhuri narrated it in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (vol. 10, p. 279) by way of Hafs bin 'Umar al-'Umari, from Hisham bin al-Kalbi. Also, Ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated it in "al-Mutamannin" (no. 93) and "al-Muhtadarin" (no. 103) (chain: Abu Zayd bin 'Umar bin Shabbah al-Numayri, from Abu Ghassan Muhammad bin Yahya al-Kinani, from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Imran al-Zuhri, from Mu'awiyah bin Muhammad, etc.).
Technical note: The narrator in this chain, "'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Imran al-Zuhri", is matruk (abandoned) and accused (muttaham).
Linguistic research: The word "al-sulla'" means the thorns of the date palm; its singular is "sulla'ah". The annexation of "al-sulla'" to "al-shawk" (thorns) here is for specification (clarification).
