Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6027

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, from his grandfather, that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) and he had dyed his white hair black, so that it looked like a crow's wing. He asked: "O Abu Abdullah! What is this?" Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "O Commander of the Believers! I like that some remnant (of youth and vigour) should be seen in me." At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) neither forbade him from it nor disapproved of it. At the time of the death of Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), his age was about one hundred years.

Grading: Its chain is "weak".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for this is the solitary narration (tafarrud) of 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith (Ibn 'Abd Allah bin 'Ayyash al-Makhzumi), and the solitary narration of someone like him is not acceptable because he is "layyin al-hadith" (weak). Al-Haythami, in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" (vol. 5, p. 162), after attributing it to al-Tabarani, indicated that its chain contains an "unnamed" (unknown) narrator, because the narration reached him in this form: Sa'id bin Abi Maryam said: "Someone whom I trust told me, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad." This points to another "'illah" (defect) in this report, namely the vagueness of Sa'id bin Abi Maryam's shaykh. It shows that Sa'id did not hear this narration directly from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, as appears in the chain of the author (al-Hakim); rather, it seems the mention of this vague narrator dropped out of his chain. Allah knows best.
