Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5974

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Umar (al-Waqidi) that Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik bin Abi Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) was the poet of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). His kunyah is reported to have been "Abu Abdullah". He took part in the Battle of Uhud, in which he received more than ten wounds and was severely injured. He did not take part in the Battle of Badr, but he took part in the Trench (Khandaq) and in all the battles with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) except the Battle of Tabuk, because he stayed behind from it; and he is one of the three Companions whose repentance Allah accepted. Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) died in the year 50 AH, during the governorship of Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with them both), and at that time he was seventy-seven years old.

Note / Clarification: "irtuththa": of the form ifta'ala, in the passive voice, meaning: he was carried from the battlefield "rathith", that is, wounded while some life remained in him.
