أخبرنا أبو جعفر البغدادي، حدثنا أبو عُلَاثة، حدثنا أبي، حدثنا ابن لَهِيعة حدثني أبو الأَسوَد، عن عُروة بن الزُّبَير، في ذِكْر من تَخلَّفَ من أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ في تَبُوكَ: كعبُ بن مالك بن القَيْنِ بن كعب بن سَوَاد بن غَنْم بن سعْد، شاعرُ رسول الله ﷺ (1).
It is narrated from Urwah bin al-Zubayr, in the mention of the Companions who stayed behind from going with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to the Battle of Tabuk, that among them was Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik bin al-Qayn (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the poet of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

(1) وأخرجه البيهقي في "دلائل النبوة" 5/ 280 عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم، بهذا الإسناد. فذكر قصة تخلُّف كعب بن مالك عن غزوة تبوك مطولةً. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 280) from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, with this chain, and he mentioned the story of Ka'b bin Malik staying behind from the expedition of Tabuk at length. وقد روى كعب بن مالك قصة تخلّفه عن غزوة تبوك، وحديثه عند البخاري (4418)، ومسلم (2769). Reference / Source: Ka'b bin Malik himself narrated the story of his staying behind from the expedition of Tabuk, and his hadith is in al-Bukhari (4418) and Muslim (2769).
