Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is hasan li-ghayrihi (hasan through other routes), and this chain can possibly be graded hasan because of Nufayl and his father Hisham (Ibn Hibban mentioned them both in "al-Thiqat"). The chain here appears to be mursal, but 'Abdullah bin Raja', Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi and Yazid bin Harun, in their narrations of this report from al-Mas'udi ('Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah bin 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud), connected it by mentioning Sa'id bin Zayd.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Mas'udi had become confused (ikhtilat); the narration of al-Tayalisi and Yazid bin Harun from him is after his confusion, but the narration of 'Abdullah bin Raja' from him is before his confusion.

Reference / Source: Ahmad (3/ 1648) recorded it from Yazid bin Harun, from al-Mas'udi, from Nufayl bin Hisham bin Sa'id bin Zayd bin 'Amr bin Nufayl, from his father, from his grandfather, who said; he mentioned it after a story and gave it as connected.
Reference / Source: Likewise connected, after a long story about Zayd bin 'Amr and Waraqah bin Nawfal seeking the religion in Syria, Mosul and elsewhere, it was narrated by 'Abdullah bin Raja' (in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" 350 and others) and by Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi in his "Musnad" (231) (and by his way more than one narrated it), both from al-Mas'udi, from Nufayl bin Hisham, from his father, from his grandfather.

Grading: Its chain is hasan.
