Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5950

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I know a man whom the tribulation will not harm." When we came to Madinah, we found a tent pitched there in which Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) was seated. We asked him, and he said: "Until this matter (the tribulation) becomes fully clear, we will not take up residence in any of their cities."
This is a great virtue, narrated with a sahih (authentic) chain of narration.

Grading: The hadith is hasan like the one before it. The narrators of this chain are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim), but it is munqati' (broken), because Abu Burdah (Ibn Abi Musa al-Ash'ari) did not hear this report from Hudhayfah; there is a man between them, as passed in the previous route. Moreover, what is mahfuz (preserved) in the narration of 'Abd al-Rahman (Ibn Mahdi) from Sufyan al-Thawri is the mention of the intermediary between Abu Burdah and Hudhayfah, whom he named "Dubay'ah". Likewise Ishaq bin Rahawayh narrated it in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1/ 12), and Sawwar bin 'Abdullah bin Sawwar in Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani's "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (587), both from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi.
