حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا إبراهيم بن مَرُزوق البصري بمصر، حدثنا أبو داود الطَّيَالسي، حدثنا شُعبة، عن أشعثَ بن أبي الشَّعْثاء، قال: سمعتُ أبا بُرْدةَ يُحدِّث عن ثَعلبة بن ضُبَيعة، قال: سمعتُ حذيفةَ يقول: إني لأعرفُ رجلًا لا تَضُرُّه الفِتنةُ. فأَتينا المدينةَ، فإذا فُسطاطٌ مضروبٌ، وإذا محمدٌ بن مَسلَمة الأنصاري، فسألتُه، فقال: لا أستَقِرُّ بمصرٍ من أمصارِهم حتى تَنجَلِيّ هذه الفِتنةُ عن جماعة المسلمينَ (3).

It is narrated from Tha'labah bin Dubay'ah: I heard Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "I know a man whom the tribulation (fitnah) will not harm." Then we came to Madinah and saw a tent pitched, and in it was Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked him (the reason for leaving the city), and he said: "I will not settle in any of their cities until this tribulation clears away from the community of the Muslims."

(3) خبر حسن، وهذا إسناد محتمل للتحسين من أجل ثعلبة بن ضُبيعة. وقيل: ضُبيعة بن حُصين، وذكر البخاري في "تاريخه" 1/ 12 أنه الصحيح في اسمه - فهو تابعيٌّ وذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات"، وهذا الخبر وإن كان موقوفًا على حذيفة بن اليمان فقد ثبت أنَّه سمع ذلك من النبي ﷺ كما في طريق أخرى رجالها ثقات سيأتي ذكرها. أبو بُردة: هو ابن أبي موسى الأشعريّ.
Grading: A hasan report, and this chain can possibly be graded hasan because of Tha'labah bin Dubay'ah. He is also said to be "Dubay'ah bin Husayn", and al-Bukhari mentioned in his "al-Tarikh" (1/ 12) that this is the correct form of his name. He is a Tabi'i, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Although this report is mawquf on Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman, it is established that he heard it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as in another route whose narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), which will be mentioned.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Burdah is Ibn Abi Musa al-Ash'ari.
وأخرجه أبو داود (4664) عن عمرو بن مرزوق، عن شعبة، بهذا الإسناد.

وأخرجه أبو داود أيضًا (4665) من طريق أبي عَوانة عن أشعث بن سُلَيم - وهو ابن أبي الشعثاء نفسُه - به، غير أنه سمَّى التابعي ضُبيعة بن حُصين الثعلبي.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4665) also recorded it by way of Abu 'Awanah, from Ash'ath bin Sulaym (who is Ibn Abi al-Sha'tha' himself), with it, except that he named the Tabi'i "Dubay'ah bin Husayn al-Tha'labi".
وأخرج أبو داود (4663) من طريق محمد بن سيرين قال: قال حذيفةُ: ما أحدٌ من الناس تُدركه الفتنةُ إلّا أنا أخافها عليه، إلّا محمد بن مسلمة؛ فإني سمعتُ رسولَ الله ﷺ يقول: "لا تضرُّك الفتنةُ". ورجاله ثقات، لكن محمد بن سيرين لم يسمع من حذيفة بن اليمان.

Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but Muhammad bin Sirin did not hear from Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman.
