Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this is distorted into "Suhayl", in the diminutive form.
Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is Ibrahim bin Sirmah, whom Yahya bin Ma'in accused of lying and al-Daraqutni declared weak; Ibn 'Adi said: most of his hadith are munkar in text and chain. Al-'Uqayli said: he narrates from Yahya bin Sa'id hadith that are not preserved from Yahya's hadith, containing munkar reports. We say: this hadith too is not preserved from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari; rather it is preserved from Hajjaj bin Artah, as will come. It has two other routes by which the hadith is strengthened. The mention of Ahmad bin Hanbal in this chain is an error (wahm), for al-Tabarani narrated this hadith in "al-Kabir" (19/ 502) from 'Abdullah bin Ahmad, directly from 'Abdullah bin Musa, and that is correct.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (29/ 17976 and 17977) and Ibn Majah (1864) recorded it by several routes from al-Hajjaj bin Artah, from Muhammad bin Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah, from his paternal uncle Sahl bin Abi Hathmah, with it.
Grading: Al-Hajjaj bin Artah is a mudallis and narrated it with 'an'anah, and Muhammad bin Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah is majhul al-hal (of unknown condition).
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (4042) recorded it by way of Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Harb, from Abu Mu'awiyah Muhammad bin Khazim, from Sahl bin Muhammad bin Abi Hathmah, from his paternal uncle Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah, who said: I saw Muhammad bin Maslamah. Abu Mu'awiyah narrated it this way, mentioning "Sahl bin Muhammad bin Abi Hathmah" in place of Muhammad bin Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah, and "Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah" in place of Sahl bin Abi Hathmah. Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (3382): "Abu Mu'awiyah inverted the chain and did not record it accurately."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: furthermore, Abu Mu'awiyah dropped al-Hajjaj bin Artah from the chain in this narration, although someone other than Zuhayr bin Harb narrated it from him and mentioned him, as we explained in our edition of "Sunan Ibn Majah" (1864). Perhaps the error of dropping al-Hajjaj came from someone below Abu Mu'awiyah; what remains is Abu Mu'awiyah's inverting of the narrators' names in the chain and his failure to record them accurately.
Reference / Source: This report has two other routes. The first was recorded by Ahmad (29/ 17981) from Waki', and by Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (620) by way of al-Mu'afa bin 'Imran, both from Thawr bin Yazid. Waki' said: "from a man of the people of Basrah", and al-Mu'afa said: "from Mut'im bin al-Miqdam, from Muhammad bin Maslamah". Mut'im is a Syrian, and his entering Basrah is not known.
Reference / Source: The second route was recorded by Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ja'far al-Anbari in his "Hadith" (98), and by his way Abu Nu'aym in "al-Ma'rifah" (621) and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "al-Asma' al-Mubhamah" (p. 43), from Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Abi al-'Awwam, from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr al-Jammal, from Ibrahim bin Ja'far bin Mahmud bin Muhammad bin Maslamah, from Umm al-Rabi' bint 'Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad bin Maslamah, who said: I saw Muhammad bin Maslamah looking.
Grading: The narrators of this chain are acceptable, but most likely the mention of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad bin Maslamah has dropped from the chain, since Umm al-Rabi' was too young to have met her grandfather Muhammad bin Maslamah; she narrated a report of Muhammad bin Maslamah through her father in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 61). If the mention of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad bin Maslamah is established, the chain can possibly be graded hasan.
