Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) weeping. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O my daughter, what has made you weep?" She said: "O my dear father, why should I not weep when these chiefs of Quraysh are in the Hatim, making a pact by swearing by al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat to kill you? If they see you, they will fall upon you, and there is not a man among them who does not know his share of your blood." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Daughter, bring me water for ablution." He (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and went out towards the mosque. When they saw him, their heads drooped. He (peace and blessings be upon him) picked up pebbles and threw them at them, saying: "May these faces be disfigured." All those whom those pebbles struck were killed as disbelievers at the Battle of Badr.
This hadith is sahih (authentic); both of them (Bukhari and Muslim) used Yahya bin Sulaym as evidence, and Muslim used Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym as evidence, but they did not record it. It is proof that ablution was already present at the very beginning of Islam, before Surah al-Ma'idah was revealed.
