Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5898

It is narrated from al-Salt bin Bahram that a man who attended the funeral of Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that when he was buried, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) stood at his grave and said: "This is how knowledge departs."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: This is how it appears in the manuscripts, but it seems to be a corruption (tahrif) of "waqafa".

Grading: Sahih, while the narrators of the present chain are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim), except that "the man on the couch" (sahib al-sarir) who informed al-Salt bin Bahram of the report is "mubham" (unnamed); he did not identify him. In any case, the report will come at number (5901) through another route with a sahih chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hammam is al-Walid bin Shuja' al-Sakuni, Damrah is Ibn Rabi'ah al-Ramli, and Ibn Shawdhab is Abd Allah.
