Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5897

It is narrated from al-Sha'bi that knowledge is taken from six of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The knowledge of Sayyiduna Umar, Abdullah bin Mas'ud and Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with them) resembled one another, and they would benefit from one another; while the knowledge of Sayyiduna Ali, Ubayy bin Ka'b and Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with them) resembled one another, and they would draw from one another. The narrator says: I asked al-Sha'bi: Was Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) also counted among these (great scholars)? He said: He was one of the eminent jurists.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy). Something similar to what al-Sha'bi (Amir bin Sharahil) said here has already been reported from Masruq bin al-Ajda' (also in al-Sha'bi's narration from him) at number (5399). Masruq met all six of these named Companions, so the chain is sahih from Masruq.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Shaybani is Abu Ishaq Sulayman bin Abi Sulayman, and Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Imam is Ibn Khuzaymah.
Reference / Source: Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Harb narrated it in "al-Ilm" (94), and through his route Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (859) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (32/64); and Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the third part (al-sifr al-thalith) of his "Tarikh" (3568), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Madkhal ila al-Sunan al-Kubra" (149) and Ibn Asakir (32/64-65) narrated it through the route of Ahmad bin Hanbal. Both of them (Zuhayr bin Harb and Ahmad bin Hanbal) narrate it from Abbad bin al-Awwam, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: Something similar will come at number (6072) through the route of Abu Ghassan from Abbad bin al-Awwam.
Reference / Source: Ya'qub bin Sufyan narrated it in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (1/444 and 481) and Ibn Asakir (32/64 and 58/424) through the route of Abd Allah bin Idris; and Ibn Asakir (42/410) through the route of Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid. Both of them narrate it from Abu Ishaq al-Shaybani.
Details of the narration: In some of the routes of Abd Allah bin Idris, Abu al-Darda' is mentioned instead of Ubayy bin Ka'b. The wording of Jarir is: "Umar, Ibn Mas'ud and Zayd bin Thabit used to debate with one another and learn from one another, and Ali, Ubayy and Abu Musa used to take knowledge from one another."
