It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin Salamah bin Waqsh (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication: 'Allahumma ighfir lil-Ansar, wa li-abna'il-Ansar, wa li-mawalil-Ansar' (O Allah, forgive the Ansar, forgive the sons of the Ansar, and forgive also the allies (freed slaves) of the Ansar).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "Habib", whereas the correct form is what we have established from Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (6028); he is Ibrahim bin Isma'il bin Abi Habibah al-Ashhali.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi", while the present chain is da'if. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the weakness of Ibn Abi Habibah (Ibrahim bin Isma'il bin Abi Habibah al-Ansari al-Ashhali). He is alone in narrating it with this chain. His shaykh Awf bin Salamah bin Awf and his father are also not known, as al-Ala'i mentioned (quoted in Ibn Hajar's "Lisan al-Mizan" 5893). For this reason Ibn Abd al-Barr said in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 573): Its entire chain is weak. Ibn Abi Fudayk is Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Muslim. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated it in the second volume of his "Tarikh" (1470 and 2891), Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1758 and 2205), Ibn Qani' in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (2/ 305), al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1130), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (18/ 152), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3376 and 5521) and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (4/ 11), via various routes from Ibn Abi Fudayk with this same chain. Details of the narration: Some narrated the wording "wa li-abna' abna' al-Ansar" (and for the grandsons of the Ansar) in place of "wa li-mawali al-Ansar" (and for the freed slaves of the Ansar), and some combined both wordings. Both are sahih and established, i.e., the supplication for the grandsons of the Ansar and for their mawali as well. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The mention of the "mawali" (freed slaves) of the Ansar is supported by the hadith of Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Talhah from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated in Muslim (2507), Ibn Hibban (7282) and al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (2169) with the words: "And for the offspring of the Ansar, and for the mawali of the Ansar." These are Muslim's words, while with the others the words are: "And for the offspring of the offspring (grandchildren) of the Ansar, and for the mawali of the Ansar." Reference / Source: This hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is narrated via Thabit al-Bunani in Ahmad (19/ 12414) and al-Nasa'i (10073); via Ata' bin al-Sa'ib in al-Tirmidhi (3909); and via Qatadah in Ibn Hibban (7280), with the words: "And for the grandsons of the Ansar", but without mention of the mawali. It will come in detail with the author (al-Hakim) under number (7151). (2506). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also in its support is the hadith of Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), with the words "and for the grandsons of the Ansar" but without mention of the mawali of the Ansar; it is in Ahmad (32/ 19292), al-Bukhari (4906) and Muslim (2506).
