Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: This addition is taken from the sources of the takhrij of this report.
Grading: It is da'if because it is "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Ishaq is Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar (the author of the Sirah), Abu Ulathah is Muhammad bin Amr bin Khalid al-Harrani (then al-Misri), Ibn Lahi'ah is Abdullah bin Lahi'ah, and Abu al-Aswad is Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Nawfal, known as "the orphan of Urwah bin al-Zubayr".
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/ 147) from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, from Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Baghdadi, with this same chain, but did not quote its wording.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hisham narrated it in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (1/ 613 and 643) from Ziyad bin Abdullah al-Bakka'i, and al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (2/ 459) via Salamah bin al-Fadl al-Abrash. Both of them narrate from Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ziyad al-Bakka'i made the story of the Bedouin and Salamah a statement of Ibn Ishaq, not traced back with a chain to Urwah; and he gave the story of Salamah on the return from Badr with a chain, from Ibn Ishaq's narration from Asim bin Umar bin Qatadah and Yazid bin Ruman, without mention of Urwah bin al-Zubayr. Salamah bin al-Fadl did likewise and confined himself to that, not mentioning in his narration the story of the Bedouin with Salamah bin Salamah. It appears that this portion of the report is what Ibn Ishaq narrated from Asim bin Umar and Yazid bin Ruman (without the story of the Bedouin). This is contrary to what the author's (al-Hakim's) handling suggests, for he joined the two chains to each other, attributed both to Urwah bin al-Zubayr and quoted the wording of one of them, giving the impression that the wording of the other is the same or close to it.
Important point: However, in "Tarikh al-Tabari" (2/ 427), at the beginning of the account of the Battle of Badr, there is something that indicates that this report is narrated by Asim bin Umar and Yazid bin Ruman from Urwah. There al-Tabari says: Ibn Humayd narrated to us, saying: Salamah narrated to us, saying: Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated to me: Muhammad bin Muslim al-Zuhri, Asim bin Umar bin Qatadah, Abdullah bin Abi Bakr and Yazid bin Ruman narrated to me from Urwah and others of our scholars, from Ibn Abbas; each of them narrated part of this hadith to me, and their narrations are combined in what I have related of the account of Badr. We say: By this, the mention of Urwah bin al-Zubayr in the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr, in the story of Salamah bin Salamah bin Waqsh on their return from Badr, is strengthened. It is also strengthened that the story of the Bedouin with Salamah is Ibn Ishaq's own statement, which he did not give with a chain, and that he mentioned it in some narrations of the Sirah and not in others, since it is not mentioned in al-Tabari, while al-Bakka'i mentioned it and made clear that it is Ibn Ishaq's statement. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi mentioned both of these stories in "al-Maghazi" (1/ 46 and 116), and he narrates the reports of the campaigns (including the Battle of Badr) from a group of his shaykhs with their chains.
Reference / Source: Musa bin Uqbah also mentioned both of these stories in his "al-Maghazi", as al-Bayhaqi transmitted from him with a chain in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/ 101-106 and 147), and this too is "mursal".
