حدثنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن يعقوب الحافظ، حدثنا يحيى بن محمد بن يحيى، حدثنا مِنْجَابُ بن الحارث، حدثنا يحيى بن آدم، عن مِسعَر، عن عمرو بن مُرَّة، عن سالم بن أبي الجَعْد، عن أخيه، عن ابن عباس قال: أراد النبيُّ ﷺ أن يتوضَّأَ من سقاءٍ، فقيل له: إنه مَيْتةٌ، فقال: "دِباغُه يذهب بخَبثِه أو نَجَسِه أو رِجْسِه" (2).
هذا حديث صحيح، ولا أعرف له عِلَّةً، ولم يُخرجاه.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to perform ablution from a water-skin, and it was said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): This is (the hide of) a carcass. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Its tanning removes its filth (or its impurity, or its uncleanness)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) and there is no hidden defect ('illah) in it, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) إسناده حسن، أخو سالم بن أبي الجعد - واسمه عبد الله فيما ذكر البيهقي - روى عنه غير واحدٍ، وذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات"، وصحَّح له هذا الحديث ابن خزيمة (114) والبيهقي 1/ 17 والمصنف، وروي معناه عن ابن عباس من غير طريقه.
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Several people narrated from the brother of Salim bin Abi al-Ja'd ('Abd Allah), and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".
Important point: Imam Ibn Khuzaymah (114), al-Bayhaqi (1/17) and the author (al-Hakim) declared this hadith sahih; moreover, narrations with the same meaning are also reported from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
وأخرجه أحمد 5/ (2878) عن يحيى بن آدم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (5/2878) through Yahya bin Adam, with this same chain.
وأخرجه أيضًا 4/ (2117) عن يزيد بن هارون عن مسعر، به.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad also narrated it (4/2117) via the chain of Yazid bin Harun from Mis'ar bin Kidam.
وروي بإسناد صحيح عن ابن عباس أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ قال: "أيُّما إهاب دُبِغَ فقد طَهُر"، أخرجه أحمد 3/ (1895)، ومسلم (366) وغيرهما.
Grading: It is narrated as marfu' from Ibn 'Abbas with an authentic (sahih) chain: "Any hide that is tanned becomes pure".
