Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5829

It is narrated from a man of Murad that he came to Sayyiduna Uways al-Qarani (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Peace be upon you." He replied: "And upon you." He asked: "O Uways! How are you?" He said: "Praise be to Allah." He asked: "How are the times treating you?" He said: "Do not ask. What would be the state of a man who, when evening comes, does not think he will see the morning, and when morning comes, is not sure he will reach the evening? O brother of Murad! The remembrance of death has left no joy for the believer. O brother of Murad! The believer's recognition of the rights of Allah does not let gold or silver remain with him (that is, he gives it all away in the path of Allah). O brother of Murad! The believer's firm adherence to the command of Allah leaves him no friend. By Allah! When we enjoin people to good and forbid them from evil, they take us as enemies, and in this (opposition) they find helpers among the sinful, until, by Allah, they level grave (slanders and) accusations against us. But by Allah! These things will never stop me from speaking the truth."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is that the shaykh of Abu al-Ahwas is unknown. Abu al-Ahwas's name is "Sallam bin Sulaym". His shaykh is named "Wuhayb" in some narrations, specified as "Ibn Abi al-Sha'tha'" in some, and as "Ibn Salamah" in others. In any case he is a "majhul" (unknown) man; it is not known who he is. Muhammad bin Ayyub refers to Ibn al-Durays al-Bajali, and Ahmad bin Yunus refers to Ahmad bin Abd Allah bin Yunus al-Yarbu'i.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (561), and by his route Ibn Asakir (9/ 445), from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (8/ 285) from Ahmad bin Abd Allah bin Yunus, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Mu'afa bin Imran narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (11), and al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna" (607) and Ibn Asakir (9/ 445-446) by way of Wahb bin Mansur. Both of them (al-Mu'afa and Wahb) narrate from Abu al-Ahwas, from Wuhayb al-Bakri, who said: A man from (the tribe of) Murad came, and he related the report.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated it in "al-Amr bi al-Ma'ruf wa al-Nahy an al-Munkar" (88), and by his route Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi (79), via al-Hasan bin Hammad al-Dabbi; and al-Shajari in his "Amali" (2/ 136-137) by way of Ali bin Muhammad al-Tanafisi. Both of them narrate from Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Muharibi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But the two of them differed over him. Al-Hasan al-Dabbi says: from him, from Ibn Salamah al-Bakri, from a man of Murad. Whereas Ali al-Tanafisi says: from him, from Ibn Wahb, from his father, who said: It reached me that a man of Murad said:
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir (9/ 435-437) narrated it by way of Muhammad bin Ayyub al-Raqqi, from Malik, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar.
Grading: Its chain is weak. Muhammad bin Ayyub al-Raqqi was declared weak by Abu Hatim al-Razi, while Ibn Hibban went further and accused him of fabrication (wad').
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "al-Hilyah" (2/ 83), and by his route Ibn Asakir (9/ 446-447), by way of Muhammad bin Humayd al-Razi, from Zafir bin Sulayman, from Sharik al-Nakha'i, from Jabir al-Ju'fi, from Amir al-Sha'bi, who said: A man from Murad passed by Uways al-Qarani, and he mentioned something similar.
Grading: Its chain is also weak, because Muhammad bin Humayd and Jabir al-Ju'fi are both weak.
