Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5828

It is narrated from Yazid bin Yazid al-Bakri that Sayyiduna Uways al-Qarani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "In the commands of Allah (in carrying them out and in fear of Him) adopt the state of one who has killed all of mankind (that is, remain at such a height of fear of Allah, solitude and sense of accountability, like someone crushed under the heaviest of burdens)."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim), but it is "munqati'" (broken) or "mu'dal", because Yazid bin Yazid al-Bakri did not live in the time of Uways al-Qarani.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (895), and by his route Ibn Asakir (9/ 444), from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain. It is also narrated from Uways by another route: al-Bayhaqi (894), and by his route Ibn Asakir (9/ 447), narrated it by way of Bishr bin al-Harith al-Hafi, who said: Uways said: "You will not attain this matter until you are as though you had killed all mankind."
Grading: This narration too is munqati', indeed "mu'dal".
