(1). It is narrated from Sufyan al-Thawri (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Uways al-Qarani had a cloak which, when he sat down, would touch the ground (because of its length). He would often make this supplication: "O Allah! I seek Your pardon regarding every hungry stomach and every naked body (for I cannot help them), for I have nothing except what is on my back (clothing) and in my stomach (food)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but it is "munqati'" (broken) or "mu'dal", because Sufyan al-Thawri did not live in the time of Uways al-Qarani. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (896), and by his route Ibn Asakir (9/ 444), from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir (9/ 445) narrated it by way of Waki' bin al-Jarrah, from Sufyan al-Thawri, who said: Qays bin Yusayr bin Amr narrated to me from his father: "Uways al-Qarani was once without clothing, so my father clothed him and he accepted." He said: Uways used to supplicate: "O Allah, do not hold me to account for every liver (that goes hungry)." Apparently this narration shows that Sufyan narrated this saying of Uways from Qays bin Yusayr, from his father. Important point: This saying is also narrated from Uways by another route. Thus Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani narrated it in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (887) and Ibn Asakir (9/ 445) by way of al-Najm bin Farqad, but that too is "munqati'" (broken), because al-Najm did not meet Uways, even though its narrators are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim). Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "al-Hilyah" (2/ 87), Ibn Asakir (9/ 444) and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" (4/ 256) by way of Asbagh bin Zayd. Its narrators are thiqah, but it too is "munqati'" (broken), because Asbagh did not meet Uways al-Qarani.
