Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5817

It is narrated from Sayfi bin Suhayb that he said: I asked my father, Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him): Why is it that you do not narrate hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as the other Companions do? He said: O my dear son! I heard just as they heard, but what prevents me from narrating hadith is that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever deliberately lies about me will be charged on the Day of Resurrection with tying a knot between the two ends of a grain of barley, and he will never be able to do it (that is, he will face severe punishment)."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the weakness of Amr bin Dinar (the steward of the family of al-Zubayr), as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis". Al-Khidr bin Aban al-Hashimi is also weak, but he is corroborated, so the real issue remains Amr bin Dinar. He also erred in the wording of the hadith, as will come.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir narrated it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (24/ 237) and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Mawdu'at" (81) via Abu Ubayd Allah Hammad bin al-Hasan bin Anbasah al-Warraq, from Sayyar bin Hatim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Likewise, it was narrated by Abd al-Razzaq (10445), al-Haytham bin Kulayb al-Shashi in his "Musnad" (986 and 987), Abd al-Baqi bin Qani' in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (2/ 19), al-Tabarani in "Turuq Hadith Man Kadhaba Alayya Muta'ammidan" (134), Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" (1/ 4), Ibn Asakir (24/ 236-237) and Ibn al-Jawzi (80), by various routes from Ja'far bin Sulayman.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All of them left unnamed ("mubham") in their narration the son of Suhayb who narrated the hadith to Amr bin Dinar; his name occurs only in the narration of Sayyar bin Hatim.
Important point: It is authentically established that this punishment (mentioned in the hadith) applies only to one who relates a dream he did not see, as in the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in al-Bukhari (7042): "Whoever claims to have seen a dream which he did not see will be made to tie a knot between two barley grains, and he will never be able to do it."
