It is narrated from Sulayman bin Abi Abdullah that Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say to us: Come, let us tell you about our military expeditions; but as for us saying "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said", that we will not do (that is, he avoided saying it out of caution).
Imam al-Hakim says that this hadith is explained by the following narration.

Note / Clarification: The name of Ya'la bin Hakim (al-Thaqafi, of Makkah and then Basrah) had dropped out of the base manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak", and it must be restored, because his mention is established in the narration of Sulayman bin Harb in Ibn Sa'd (3/ 210), and it is present in other narrations as well.
Grading: Its chain is, Allah willing, "hasan". Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is because of Sulayman bin Abi Abd Allah, who is one of the senior Successors. Al-Bukhari and Ibn Hibban said that he met the Muhajirun, and Abu Hatim al-Razi added: "and the Ansar". Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 210), and by his route al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (1/ 183) and Ibn Asakir (24/ 236), from Sulayman bin Harb, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it in "al-Thiqat" (4/ 314) by way of Wahb bin Jarir bin Hazim, and Ibn Asakir (24/ 236) by way of Affan bin Muslim. Both of them narrate from Jarir bin Hazim, with this same chain.
