It is narrated from Abu Wa'il that Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon to us that was extremely eloquent and brief. We said: O Abu al-Yaqzan! You have spoken very comprehensively and briefly. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Indeed, the lengthiness of a man's prayer and the brevity of his sermon are a sign of his understanding (fiqh). So lengthen the prayer and keep the sermon short."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording!

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Wa'il refers to Shaqiq bin Salamah. Reference / Source: Ahmad (30/ 18317), Muslim (869) and Ibn Hibban (2791) narrated it by two routes from Abd al-Rahman bin Abd al-Malik bin Abjar, with this same chain. Important point: Therefore al-Hakim's inclusion of this hadith as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight on his part. (1078). Note / Clarification: And see what preceded as number (1078). Note / Clarification: His words "ma'innah min fiqh al-rajul" mean: that by which a man's understanding (fiqh) is recognised. Anything that points to something else is its "ma'innah" (sign/indication).
