It is narrated from al-Ashtar that Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) told me (without my asking him): No day ever weighed more heavily on me than the matter of Ammar, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me on an expedition with some of his Companions and appointed me as their commander, and Ammar was also among that party. We came upon a people among whom there was a household of Muslims. Ammar and some other Muslims spoke to me about them and said: Let them go. I said: No, by Allah! I will not do so until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sees them and forms his opinion about them. At this Ammar became angry with me. When I returned and sought permission to come into the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asking me about what had happened and I was reporting to him. Meanwhile Ammar also asked permission, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission. Ammar entered and said: O Messenger of Allah! Have you not seen what Khalid did? So I said (in a fit of anger): O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, were it not for regard for your gathering, this son of Sumayyah would not revile me. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ammar! Go outside." Ammar went out weeping, saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had not supported him against Khalid. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Why did you not answer the man?" I said: Nothing prevented me from answering him except my contempt for him (that is, I did not consider him my equal). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said: "Indeed, whoever hates Ammar, Allah will hate him; whoever reviles Ammar, Allah will revile him; and whoever belittles Ammar, Allah will belittle him." Then I left the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and kept asking Ammar for pardon until he prayed for forgiveness for me.

Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for the weakness is that Yahya bin Salamah bin Kuhayl is weak. Although his brother Muhammad corroborated him, he added in his chain, between his father Salamah and Imran bin Abi al-Ja'd, a man whose kunyah is "Abu Yahya", and we have not been able to identify him. He also added Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid between Imran and al-Ashtar. Note that Muhammad bin Salamah bin Kuhayl is also weak, like his brother. Identification of names: Abu al-Jawwab is al-Ahwas bin Jawwab al-Dabbi. Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili recorded it (as in Ibn Kathir's "Jami' al-Masanid wa al-Sunan" 2748) - and through his route Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (43/ 400) - and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (3832), through the route of al-Azraq bin Ali, from Hassan bin Ibrahim, from Muhammad bin Salamah bin Kuhayl, from his father, from Abu Yahya, from Imran bin Abi al-Ja'd, from Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid, from al-Ashtar, from Khalid bin al-Walid. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator "al-Azraq" was mentioned by Ibn Hibban in "al-Thiqat", and he said that he brings "ghara'ib" (unusual narrations).
