Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5778

Alqamah narrates from Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Some words passed between me and Ammar bin Yasir, and I was harsh with him. So Ammar went off to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to complain. Meanwhile Khalid also came while Ammar was complaining, and he began to be even harsher with Ammar, and his harshness only kept increasing, while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. Then Ammar wept and said: O Messenger of Allah! Do you not see him (being harsh with me)? The narrator said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head and said: "Whoever shows enmity to Ammar, Allah will show enmity to him; and whoever hates Ammar, Allah will hate him." Khalid said: Then I went out, and nothing was dearer to me than Ammar's being pleased. So I met him, and he became pleased (with me).
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic) and on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), because both of them agreed upon al-Awwam bin Hawshab and Alqamah; although Shu'bah is a greater hafiz than him, as he said in its chain: "Salamah bin Kuhayl, from Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid, from his father, from al-Ashtar". And both chains are sahih (authentic).

Grading: Its narrators are trustworthy (thiqat), but it has a "defect" ('illah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Namely, that al-Awwam bin Hawshab contradicted Shu'bah in narrating its chain. This is the view of Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah al-Razi, which Ibn Abi Hatim quoted in "al-Ilal" (2588). In detail: al-Awwam dropped from his chain some of the narrators whom Shu'bah mentioned, and he named "Alqamah" (Ibn Qays al-Nakha'i) in place of "al-Ashtar al-Nakha'i", whereas Shu'bah narrates it from Salamah bin Kuhayl, from Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid, from his father, from al-Ashtar, from Khalid, as has passed. However, Ibn Hibban (7081) and the author (al-Hakim) differed from this view of Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah and declared this narration of al-Awwam bin Hawshab sahih.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (28/ 16814), al-Nasa'i (8211) and Ibn Hibban (7081) recorded it through the route of Yazid bin Harun, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la in his "Mu'jam" (227) and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (3835) recorded it via Hushaym from al-Awwam bin Hawshab.
