Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5755

It is narrated from al-Hakam bin Utaybah that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) first came to Madinah, Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is essential that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) have a place where, after his midday rest, he (peace and blessings be upon him) can take shade and offer prayer. So Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered stones and built the Mosque of Quba. Thus it is the first mosque that was built, and Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) built it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The word "al-Madinah" had dropped out of our manuscripts, and its mention is necessary. We supplied it from Izz al-Din Ibn al-Athir's "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/ 630), where he transmitted this report with its chain from the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr.

Grading: It is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah (who is Ibn Utbah al-Mas'udi) had become confused in his memory (ikhtilat), and this report of his is also "mursal". Moreover, al-Hakam bin Utaybah is one of the junior Successors.
Reference / Source: Izz al-Din Ibn al-Athir recorded it in "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/ 630) via Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar, with this same chain.
Important point: The well-known view is that the Mosque of Quba' was built by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself, and some Companions were with him, as in the hadith of al-Shamus bint al-Nu'man found in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (24/ 801 and 802), Ibn Abi Asim's "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (3488) and Abu Nu'aym's "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7713).
Reference / Source: And as in "Sahih al-Bukhari" (3906), in the mursal narration of Urwah bin al-Zubayr: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed among Banu Amr bin Awf for some ten-odd nights and laid the foundation of the mosque that was founded on piety (taqwa), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in it.
