Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5751

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Salimah: On the day of Siffin I saw Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him). He was an old, tall man; he was holding a spear in his hand, and his hand was trembling (because of old age). He said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! I have fought with this spear in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) three times, and this is the fourth time." Then he said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! Even if these enemies were to beat us until they drove us as far as the palm branches of Hajar (that is, an extremely distant place), I would still be certain that I am upon the truth and they are upon falsehood."

Grading: This report is, if Allah wills, "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd Allah bin Salimah (al-Muradi al-Kufi) is weak but acceptable for corroboration. The statement of Ammar bin Yasir on the day of Siffin at the end of the report: "By the One in whose hand is my soul …" is also narrated through another chain in Ibn Abi Shaybah's "al-Musannaf" (15/ 289), and its chain could possibly be graded hasan.
Reference / Source: A third chain of it is also found with Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 238), whose narrators are trustworthy, but it is "mursal".
Note / Clarification: For further detail see number (5749), which has passed earlier.
Note / Clarification: The meaning of "sa'afat Hajar": "sa'afat" is the plural of "sa'afah", meaning palm branches. Ibn al-Athir says that "Hajar" (the place) was specifically mentioned because it is very far away and it is well known for its abundance of palm trees. For more on "Hajar" see the explanation at number (4425).
