(4). Sayyiduna Talhah bin Yahya narrates from his grandmother, Sayyidah Su'da bint Awf al-Murriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), that Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me and I found him sorrowful. I asked: "What is the matter, that I see your face downcast? Has something from our side displeased you?" He said: "No, by Allah! Nothing from you has displeased me; you are the best of companions in life. The real matter is that a great deal of wealth has gathered with me (and that is why I am troubled)." She said: "Then distribute it among your household and your people." She (the narrator) said: So he did just that. I asked the treasurer how much wealth he had distributed. He told me: "Four hundred thousand (dirhams)." And his daily income was a full thousand (dirhams). For this reason he was called "Talhah al-Fayyad" (the overflowingly generous).

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: (3) In manuscripts (M) and (B) this has been corrupted into "al-Harbi".
Grading: (4) Its chain is hasan on account of Talhah bin Yahya (Ibn Talhah bin 'Ubayd Allah), who is saduq (truthful) and hasan in hadith. Note / Clarification: Sufyan refers to "Ibn 'Uyaynah", and Ibn Abi 'Umar refers to "Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abi 'Umar al-'Adani". Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" 3/ 201, al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" 10/ 117, Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Islah al-Mal" (96), 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal in his additions (ziyadat) to his father's "al-Zuhd" (782), al-Khattabi in "Gharib al-Hadith" 2/ 218, Abu Nu'aym in "Hilyat al-Awliya'" 1/ 88 and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (376), and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 25/ 100 and 101, through various routes from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, in the same way. Details of the narration: The last sentence of this report, describing Talhah as "al-Fayyad", was mentioned by no one except al-Khattabi and Abu Nu'aym. Reference / Source: Ya'qub bin Sufyan narrated in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" 1/ 457 from Abu Bakr al-Humaydi, and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (194) via the route of Asad bin Musa, both from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah. In al-Humaydi's narration: Sufyan said: He (Talhah) used to be called "al-Fayyad". And in Asad's narration: Sufyan said: His family used to say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) named him "al-Fayyad". Important point: It seems that this part of the report is the words of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah himself. And Allah knows best.
