Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "talif" (ruined, extremely weak) because of Ishaq bin Idris (al-Uswari al-Basri).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith); Ibn Ma'in accused him of lying, and Ibn Hibban said: "He steals hadith". Abu Zur'ah al-Razi said (as in Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-'Ilal" 2628): I do not know anyone other than Ishaq bin Idris who narrated this hadith, and Ishaq is very weak (wahin) in this hadith. Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" 1/ 333 quoted 'Abbad bin Yazid al-Bahrani as saying: "This is a repugnant (shani') hadith; the first to narrate it was so-and-so the tailor (al-khayyat), and Yahya bin Ma'in pounced on him." Ibn Tahir al-Maqdisi said in "Dhakhirat al-Huffaz" (2350): meaning that this Ishaq stole it from the tailor.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim narrated it in "al-Sunnah" (1394), al-Bazzar (968), Ibn 'Adi 1/ 333, Abu al-Shaykh al-Asbahani in "Akhlaq al-Nabi (peace and blessings be upon him)" (480), and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 18/ 392 - 393, through various routes from Ishaq bin Idris al-Uswari, with this chain.
Details of the narration: Hammad bin Salamah narrated this report, in Ishaq bin Rahawayh's "Musnad" (1977), from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, as "mursal": The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent al-Zubayr and another man on the night of al-Ahzab, on a bitterly cold night. They looked (at the enemy) and came back, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a wrap (mirt) belonging to Umm Salamah; he brought the two of them into the wrap, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pressed close to Umm Salamah. It was narrated thus as mursal, with no mention of 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr or his father al-Zubayr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This mursal narration shows that this was on the night of al-Ahzab. If that is established, then it has come through several routes from Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him alone on the night of al-Ahzab to bring him news of them. Hudhayfah went to them and learned their news, then returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw him praying in a patterned wrap (mirt murahhal) belonging to one of his wives. He said: When he saw me he brought me into his place, and threw the end of the wrap over me, then he bowed and prostrated while I was in it. When he gave the salam I told him the news. This is how it comes in Ahmad 38/ (358). In the narration of Muslim (1788) he said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) covered me with the spare part of a cloak ('aba'ah) he had on, in which he was praying, and I remained asleep until morning.
Grading: It is as if Hudhayfah is the "other man" mentioned in the mursal of 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr.
Important point: But here it is not stated that any of his wives was in the wrap; rather, the wrap belonged to one of his wives, and there is a difference between the two. The hadith of Hudhayfah is more firmly established (athbat) and more deserving of acceptance than the mursal of 'Urwah. And Allah knows best.
