Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but there is disagreement over it on al-Layth bin Sa'd.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Bukayr (who is Yahya bin 'Abdullah bin Bukayr) was contradicted in it by three narrators: 'Abdullah bin Salih, 'Abdullah bin Wahb and Qutaybah bin Sa'id. These three narrated it from al-Layth, from Abu al-Aswad (Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Nawfal) as his own words, with no mention of 'Urwah, and this is the "mahfuz" (preserved) version. Likewise there is disagreement from Abu al-Aswad about al-Zubayr's age when he accepted Islam. One narration from him has the wording: "He accepted Islam at the age of eight (8)" (as here), and another has the wording: "He was twelve (12) years old."
Reference / Source: Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi narrated it in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (783), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (162) and (238), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (419), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 6/ 208 and 367, and Ibn 'Asakir 18/ 344, through various routes from Yahya bin 'Abdullah bin Bukayr, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: 'Umar bin Shabbah narrated it (as in Ibn 'Abd al-Barr's "al-Isti'ab", in the biography of 'Ali bin Abi Talib, p. 524), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (239), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (414) and "Hilyat al-Awliya'" 1/ 89, and via him Ibn 'Asakir 18/ 344, via 'Abdullah bin Wahb. Likewise Ahmad bin Hanbal in "al-'Ilal wa Ma'rifat al-Rijal" (590), Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the third part of his "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (390), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (413) and Ibn 'Asakir 18/ 349 narrated it via Qutaybah bin Sa'id. And al-Hasan bin 'Ali al-Hulwani narrated it in his book "al-Ma'rifah" (as in Ibn 'Abd al-Barr's "al-Isti'ab", in the biography of 'Ali, p. 524) from 'Abdullah bin Salih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): These three ('Abdullah bin Wahb, Qutaybah bin Sa'id and 'Abdullah bin Salih) narrate it from al-Layth bin Sa'd, from Abu al-Aswad Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman, as his own words; he did not narrate it from his shaykh 'Urwah. In the narration of 'Abdullah bin Salih, Abu al-Aswad said: it reached him that 'Ali bin Abi Talib and al-Zubayr accepted Islam when both of them were eight (8) years old.
Important point: Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said: I do not know anyone who held this view of Abu al-Aswad.
Reference / Source: Ibn Ma'in narrated in his "Tarikh" (narration of 'Abbas al-Duri, 199), and via him al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna" (1163), and Ibn 'Asakir 18/ 344, via Abu Salih 'Abd al-Ghaffar bin Dawud al-Harrani, from al-Layth bin Sa'd, from Abu al-Aswad and others: "'Ali and al-Zubayr accepted Islam at the age of twelve (12)."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abd al-Ghaffar bin Salih narrated it with this wording and he too made it the words of Abu al-Aswad.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "al-Ma'rifah" (411) and (425) via Qutaybah bin Sa'id, from al-Layth, from Abu al-Aswad, from 'Urwah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In it he agreed with 'Abd al-Ghaffar al-Harrani in the wording, but differed from him by mentioning "'Urwah bin al-Zubayr" in the chain. However, Abu Nu'aym's second wording reads: "Al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam heard a rumour from Satan that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had been seized; this was after he had accepted Islam, and he was twelve (12) years old …" This incident will come in the author's (al-Hakim's) work at number (5650). It appears that this is the actual wording of the report from Qutaybah from al-Layth: that the incident mentioned took place when al-Zubayr was twelve, from which it was understood that his Islam was at the age of twelve, and it was transmitted that way in abridged form out of a mistaken impression. Probably the same happened in the narration of 'Abd al-Ghaffar al-Harrani too. This is supported by the fact that Yahya bin 'Abdullah bin Bukayr mentioned this same incident in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Kubra" 6/ 367, in wording similar to what Abu Nu'aym gives in the second place, indeed more clearly.
Important point: This shows the error of whoever said in his narration that al-Zubayr accepted Islam at the age of twelve, whereas the correct position is that his age at the time of the incident was twelve. But it does indicate that 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr held that al-Zubayr accepted Islam before the age of twelve, and this contradicts what has passed at number (5642) from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr in the narration of his son Hisham from him, that al-Zubayr accepted Islam at the age of sixteen (16)! And Allah the Exalted knows best.
