Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5647

Hisham bin Urwah narrates from his father that he said: Al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam and made both emigrations to Abyssinia. He never stayed behind from any battle fought alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (i.e., he took part in every expedition). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood (mu'akhat) between him and Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). He was a man of medium height, with a light beard, a wheat-brown complexion, and much hair on his body.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts this nisbah is corrupted into "al-Ayli" (with ya' after the alif instead of mim), whereas the correct nisbah is to "Amul", the capital of Tabaristan and its largest city. Imam Muhammad bin Jarir al-Tabari narrated from him abundantly in his "Tafsir" and "Tahdhib al-Athar", and attributes him as "al-Amuli".

Grading: (2) All its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy) except 'Amr bin 'Abd al-Hamid al-Amuli, whose biography we have not found, except that Imam al-Tabari narrated from him abundantly in his "Tafsir" and "Tahdhib al-Athar", and he was his fellow townsman.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement in its chain from Abu Usamah (Hammad bin Usamah), as explained at number (5642), over whether 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr is mentioned in the chain or not. The takhrij concerning al-Zubayr's Islam and his not staying behind from the expeditions has already passed there.
Details of the narration: It will come later at number (5652) via Abu al-Aswad, from 'Urwah, from al-Zubayr, who said: "By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not go out on any expedition or raiding party except that I was in it." So the narrator made the chain connected (mawsul) by mentioning al-Zubayr, i.e. that it was al-Zubayr himself who told his son 'Urwah this.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the other reports here concerning al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam, no one other than "'Amr bin 'Abd al-Hamid al-Amuli" mentioned them gathered together like this. However, Ibn Sa'd 3/ 95 narrated the mention of al-Zubayr's brotherhood (mu'akhah) with Ibn Mas'ud from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, from Musa bin Muhammad bin Ibrahim, from his father, as "mursal".
Reference / Source: And from others he narrated what contradicts this, through several good (jayyid) mursal chains. Among them is Hisham bin 'Urwah from his father: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood between al-Zubayr and Ka'b bin Malik. Ibn 'Asakir 50/ 187 narrated it via Hammad bin Salamah, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father,
Grading: and this is more sound (asahh).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the description of al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam's height, the opposite of what is here has also been narrated. That is what Abu Nu'aym narrated in "al-Ma'rifah" (410) and Ibn 'Asakir 18/ 345 - 346 via Ibn Abi al-Zinad, and 18/ 346 via Abu al-Zinad, both from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father: "Al-Zubayr was tall; when he rode a mount his feet would touch the ground."
Grading: And this is more sound (asahh).
Reference / Source: The abundance of al-Zubayr's hair is narrated by Ibn Sa'd 3/ 100, Abu Nu'aym in "al-Ma'rifah" (407) and (408), and Ibn 'Asakir 18/ 345 - 347 through several routes.
