Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5637

Salim narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)), who narrates from Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a funeral passed by, and a man from the Jews asked: "O Muhammad! Does this funeral (the deceased) speak?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. The Jew said: "I bear witness that it speaks." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the People of the Book tell you something, then (neither affirm nor deny it, but) say: We believe in Allah, His angels, His Books and His Messengers."
This hadith is known through al-Harith bin Ubaydah al-Ruhawi from al-Zuhri, and we have written it at the end of the manuscript of Yunus bin Yazid from al-Zuhri:

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its chain is "da'if" (weak) because of the weakness of al-Harith bin 'Abidah (al-Kala'i) and his inconsistency (idtirab) in it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani narrated this report in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1784) via 'Uthman bin Khalid bin 'Amr al-Salafi, from 'Abdullah bin 'Abd al-Jabbar al-Khaba'iri, from al-Harith bin 'Abidah, from Baqiyyah bin al-Walid, from al-Zubaydi, from al-Zuhri. In it he added two narrators to the chain. Baqiyyah bin al-Walid is "mutakallam fihi" (criticised), and he is closer to weakness.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5149) via Ahmad bin Khalid bin 'Amr al-Salafi, from his father, from al-Harith bin 'Abidah, from al-Zubaydi, from al-Zuhri.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): So he did not mention "Baqiyyah" in his chain. But Khalid bin 'Amr al-Salafi is also weak in hadith.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith has been narrated through more than one route from al-Zuhri, from Namlah bin Abi Namlah, from his father, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is in Ahmad 28/ (17225), Abu Dawud (3644) and Ibn Hibban (6257).
Grading: Its chain is "hasan", if Allah wills, on account of Namlah.

Note / Clarification: (1) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this name is corrupted into "'an". The correct reading is "Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli".
