Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir narrated it at 26/ 42 via 'Ubayd Allah bin Sa'id from Harun bin Ma'ruf from Damrah, from Ya'qub bin 'Ata'; he made it the statement of his father 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah, not of his son. Reference / Source: Abu Zur'ah al-Dimashqi in "Tarikh Dimashq" (p. 226) and Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1860) narrated it through Abd al-Rahman bin Ibrahim from Damrah bin Rabi'ah, as the statement of Raja' bin Abi Salamah. Reference / Source: Ya'qub bin Sufyan (2/ 419), Ibn Abi 'Asim (1861) and Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 208) narrated via Damrah bin Rabi'ah from Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid al-Hizami, who said: I attended a funeral in Bayt al-Maqdis with Raja' bin Haywah, and he said: O Abu 'Amr! Here is the grave of your brother 'Ubadah bin al-Samit. Important point: Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Isti'ab p. 469) says that the grave of 'Ubadah is known there (in Bayt al-Maqdis) to this day, i.e. up to the fifth century AH. This is also the view of Abu Mushir, Ibn Mandah and al-Haytham bin 'Adi. Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir 26/ 184, 205. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There are also narrations to the contrary: Ibn Sa'd (3/ 56) and Ibn 'Asakir (26/ 205) narrated via Ya'qub bin Mujahid from 'Ubadah bin al-Walid from his father that 'Ubadah died in the city of "al-Ramlah" in the land of Syria. Important point: Al-Fallas, Yahya bin Bukayr and Abu 'Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam stated this with certainty, and this appears to be more correct, because its narrator is his own son, who knew his father's circumstances better, and the chain up to him is also sahih. Note / Clarification: There is no contradiction between this and his living in Bayt al-Maqdis (as is apparent from the statement of Abu Sallam al-Aswad). Apparently he was a resident of Bayt al-Maqdis, but at the time of his death he was in al-Ramlah, where he died.
