Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5616

Ata bin al-Sa'ib narrates from the son of Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), who narrates from his father (Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him)), that Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked them (the Ansar): "O people of the Ansar! What is the matter with you, that you did not come to receive me along with your brothers from Quraysh?" Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Because of our need (poverty and want)." Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then why did you not come on your water-carrying camels?" Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We wore them out (completely) on the day of Badr in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: This text is missing from manuscripts (Z) and (B), and we have restored it from the other sources that document the hadith, while in manuscripts (S) and (M) there is a blank space in place of the words "Ibn 'Ubadah bin al-Samit from his father".

Note / Clarification: Linguistic note: in Arabic "amaddahu al-shay'" is said when something puts someone to severe hardship. Here the original form should have been "amdadnaha" (with the doubled letter separated), but keeping the doubling is also permissible. Some sources have the words "andaynaha", meaning to make lean or to exhaust, and some have "ansabnaha" (to exhaust); all these words are close in meaning.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sulayman bin Tarkhan al-Taymi is older than 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, so this narration is of the type "al-akabir 'an al-asaghir" (the older narrating from the younger). This is conclusive evidence that he heard from 'Ata' in the early period, before his memory deteriorated.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Ibn 'Ubadah bin al-Samit" is al-Walid bin 'Ubadah, as Imam Ibn 'Asakir stated explicitly, and he is a thiqah narrator.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it with this same chain from Ibrahim bin Na'ilah al-Asbahani, as mentioned in Ibn Kathir's "Jami' al-Masanid wa al-Sunan" (5825).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Shashi narrated it in his Musnad (1197), Ibn al-A'rabi in his Mu'jam (1086) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (26/ 200-201) with the chain of 'Umar bin Abd al-Wahhab al-Riyahi from al-Mu'tamir bin Sulayman.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir narrated it at 26/ 201 via Abu Hamzah Muhammad bin Maymun al-Sukkari from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, in which the name of "Ibn 'Ubadah" is stated explicitly as "al-Walid".
Details of the narration: A similar story between Mu'awiyah and Abu Qatadah al-Ansari was narrated by Ma'mar bin Rashid in "al-Jami'" (19909).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain contains Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil, whose narration is not accepted when he is alone, let alone when he contradicts trustworthy narrators; moreover, he narrated this report as mursal.
Details of the narration: A similar incident between Mu'awiyah and Qays bin Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (or Sa'id bin Sa'd bin 'Ubadah) was transmitted by al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (5/ 124) from Abu al-Hasan al-Mada'ini without a chain.
